NBA 2k – A Cultural Phenomenon

My girlfriend thinks I’m a huge nerd. I love video games… sports video games specifically and I spend more time than I should be playing them. I don’t think I’m in the minority here, especially when it comes to a game like NBA 2k. It’s funny I heard jokes about NBA 2k day and people taking days off work to play which is kinda crazy right? But it gives you an idea of how popular this game is.

My experience this year looking back was pretty funny but, at the time super annoying and made me so mad. The day 2k18 game out I was going away for a work trip. I wanted to pre-order the gold edition which in Australia was only available as a digital download. I had everything planned, I got paid Thursday so I would pre-order the game after work, I’d leave for my trip Friday while the game was downloading and it’d be read when I returned Sunday night, foolproof right? first PlayStation Network wouldn’t accept my credit card, apparently an issue many have faced. So I did what any sane man would do I went on to JB HIFI’s website and purchased 5 or 6 digital download cards that would top up my wallet. I started receiving emails with codes to put the money in my wallet but, after about 20 minutes I noticed that one was missing. It was the longest 2 hours of my life waiting for that final code to come but when It did I got in just in time and started the lengthy downloading process.

I can remember when my allegiance switched from NBA live to NBA 2k. I was about 16 and I’d just purchased NBA live 06 and after I’d played through a season of franchise mode or the dynasty or whatever it was called, played the three-point and dunk contests, I was tired of it.

Almost 12 months had passed and I’d hardly played it, I went over to my friends’ house and he had a copy of nab 2k6 I played it with him and fell in love. The next day I went to EB games and traded in everything I had (I had no money) and I remember having just enough to get the new NBA 2k7. Shaq was on the cover and I started a franchise with lakers who were still feeling the aftermath of the Shaq and Kobe feud. I built a team over a period of a few seasons and won multiple championships, I couldn’t stop playing, I was addicted. From that point on every year, I’ve had to pick up the latest version.

Fast forward 10 years to 2017 and NBA 2k18 is arguably the best basketball game if not sports game ever produced. Prior to this installment, i didn’t have much interest in the My Park or Pro-Am I loved sticking to the story mode in My Career and building NBA championship teams in MyGM. However, the introduction of the neighborhood has encouraged me to engage with these additional modes and I am hooked more than ever. Everything is connected and every game feels meaningful like I’m achieving something.

Now the NBA and 2k are launching a professional NBA 2k league in May with all 17 teams being owned and operated by existing NBA franchises. I don’t know how it will work, who will be involved or where games will be played but, I’m all in. If anyone from the NBA is reading this check out my highlights package… Man’s HOT!
